Will Altman's 'AGI''matter a lot less' than people thought?

But Altman tried to lower expectations for AGI last month, saying it would “matter much less” than people thought. Downplaying its previous definition of AGI may work in OpenAI’s favor, since the company is tied to Microsoft via exclusivity deals it made in 2023 until OpenAI officially declares that AGI has been achieved.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says that the company is confident that it knows “how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it,” referring to the tech industry’s long-sought benchmark of artificial general intelligence.

Is AGI a big deal?

In short, AGI is kind of a big deal, and Altman understands that. “Given the possibilities of our work, OpenAI cannot be a normal company,” Altman said. “How lucky and humbling it is to be able to play a role in this work.”
